Abstract: It is becoming more and more common for machine learning to be used to make predictions about individuals. Whenever these predictions lead to decisions that are relevant to the individuals’ lives, it is natural for them to strategically modify their own features in order to receive desirable predictions. How is the learning process impacted by the presence of strategically modified inputs? What should the learner’s goal be in such a setting? Can the strategizing ever benefit the learner? I will discuss prior work on this subject, and share new insights from joint work with Yo and Brian Axelrod.
